Rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter: Principle, Usage and Wiring Comprehensive Analysis

2026-03-19

In industrial automation control systems, temperature is one of the most common and crucial process variables. How to accurately and stably transmit the temperature signal detected by the sensor to the PLC or DCS system? The rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter is the core component to solve this problem. This article will provide a concise analysis of its working principle, usage method and wiring method.

  1. What is a rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter?

A rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter is an industrial instrument that is installed using a 35mm standard DIN rail. Its main function is to isolate and convert signals from thermal resistors (such as PT100) or thermocouples (such as K-type) into standard DC signals (typically 4-20mA or 1-5V), so that they can be remotely transmitted to the control system for processing and analysis.

It is called "intelligent" because it adopts digital technology internally and possesses advanced functions such as automatic calibration, temperature drift compensation, and adjustable range, overcoming the shortcomings of traditional analog transmitters, such as poor linearity and complex debugging .

  1. Working Principle: How does the signal "translate" into standard output?

The working principle of the rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter can be summarized into three steps:

① Signal acquisition: Receive the weak electrical signals from the Temperature Sensor - the thermal resistor changes its resistance value with temperature, while the thermocouple generates a millivolt-level voltage signal.

② Isolation and Amplification: The internal circuit performs isolation, amplification, and linearization processing on the input signal. The key point lies in the mutual isolation among the input, output, and power supply (typically with an isolation strength of 1500VAC), which effectively suppresses electromagnetic interference in the industrial environment and enhances system reliability .

③ Standardized output: After processing, the signal is converted into a standard industrial signal of 4-20mA current or 1-5V voltage. 4-20mA is the mainstream choice for two-wire transmitters because of its strong anti-interference ability and suitability for long-distance transmission.

  1. How to Use? Selection and Installation Tips
  • Installation Method

The rail-mounted transmitter is installed using the TS35 standard DIN rail mounting. Just gently insert it into the rail to fix it; no screws are required, and it is also easy to remove. It is recommended to install it vertically to facilitate heat dissipation inside.

  • Parameter Settings

The advantage of the intelligent transmitter lies in its ability to be configured on-site:

Some models support modifying the sensor type (such as PT100, K-type thermocouple, etc.) and the range (from -6) by simply touching the button or using the handheld programmer.

There is no need to adjust the potentiometer as in traditional transmitters. High precision -5 can be achieved through digital calibration.

  • Power Supply Method

The common power supply voltage is 24V DC. Some models adopt a wide power supply design (such as DC/AC 20-260V), which offers greater adaptability. The power consumption is generally within 1.5W.

  1. How to Connect? Detailed Explanation of Three Typical Scenarios

Connecting wires is the most concerning issue for on-site engineers. Here are the three most common wiring scenarios:

  • Scene 1: PT100 thermal resistance input (three-wire system)

The Pt100 Sensor usually has three wires connected (two of the same color and one of a different color):

Connection rules: Two wires of the same color (with resistance close to 0Ω) are connected to terminals 2 and 3 of the transmitter; the wire of a different color (approximately 100Ω or more) is connected to terminal .

Why three-wire system: This connection method can eliminate the influence of wire resistance on measurement accuracy

  • Scene 2: Input of K-type thermocouple

Connection rule: The positive terminal of the thermocouple is connected to terminal 2, and the negative terminal is connected to terminal .

Note: Thermocouples do not require lead wire compensation, but the intelligent transmitter will perform cold junction temperature compensation internally.

  • Scene 3: 4-20mA Output Circuit Wiring (Two-Wire System)

This is the most common wiring method for the output. The two signal wires of the transmitter are both power lines and signal lines :

  • Method 1: Powered by an independent 24V power supply

The "+" terminal of the 24V power supply is connected to the "+" terminal of the transmitter's output signal.

The "negative" output signal of the transmitter is connected to the "positive" terminal of the PLC/ digital display meter.

The "-" terminal of the PLC/ digital display meter is connected to the "-" terminal of the 24V power supply to form a complete circuit

  • Method 2: The control system is directly powered.

If the DCS/PLC card has its own 24V power supply, you can directly connect the signal line of the transmitter to the corresponding terminal. The card will automatically supply power to the transmitter

Signal correspondence: Taking the range of -20 to 140℃ as an example, -20℃ corresponds to 4mA, 60℃ corresponds to 12mA, and 140℃ corresponds to 20mA - 1.

  1. Typical Application Domains

The rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter, with its high accuracy, strong anti-interference capability and convenient installation features, is widely used in the following :

Petrochemical industry: Reaction vessel and pipeline temperature monitoring

Electricity industry: Temperature monitoring for transformers and switch cabinets

  Metallurgical manufacturing: Furnace temperature control

New energy: Battery pack temperature monitoring, charging station temperature measurement

Aerospace: Temperature collection of ground testing equipment

Conclusion

The rail-mounted intelligent temperature transmitter serves as the "bridge" that connects the on-site sensors with the central control system. Mastering its principles, installation methods, and wiring techniques not only ensures the stable operation of the system but also significantly enhances the efficiency of on-site debugging. Whether it is the three-wire connection method of PT100 or the correct connection of the 4-20mA circuit, following the standard procedures will make temperature measurement accurate and simple.
